Welcome to our “Meet the Expert” series, where we introduce you to the dedicated professionals at angli-EAR Hearing. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Sanjam, one of our skilled audiologists, who shares her journey and passion for the field of audiology.
What initially drew you to the field of audiology?
Growing up, I often saw my aunt excel in the field of audiology, sharing fulfilling stories about her work. Her success and happiness inspired me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Over the course of my degree, I became increasingly drawn to audiology, captivated by the technology and the structured nature of the field.
Can you describe your educational and professional journey to becoming an audiologist?
My journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. Driven by curiosity, I pursued a Master’s in Advanced Audiology at UCL, London, which was transformative. Learning from leading experts and experiencing practical applications of my studies were significant milestones in my professional journey.
What are some of the most rewarding aspects of being an audiologist?
Every client has a unique story, making each day in audiology new and interesting. One particularly rewarding experience involved a paediatric client who was able to fully participate in her sports day without worrying about her hearing aid. Such moments make everything worthwhile.
What do you enjoy most about working as an audiologist?
The best part is meeting new people every day. Each client’s life experiences offer valuable lessons and fresh perspectives, making every day a learning opportunity.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as an audiologist?
As a perfectionist, meeting each client’s unique needs is both a challenge and a motivation. This drive to provide exceptional care keeps me passionate and dedicated to my work.
How do you stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in audiology?
Being part of a large team is invaluable for staying current. We regularly read research papers and discuss our findings, which helps us all stay informed and engaged.
How do you approach building rapport and trust with your clients?
Building rapport and trust begins with actively listening to clients’ concerns and demonstrating empathy. Clear communication and transparency are key to creating a comfortable and supportive environment.
What advice would you give to someone who might be experiencing hearing loss but is hesitant to seek help?
Educate yourself about your ears and hearing health. Visiting our clinic and having a chat can also help alleviate concerns. We publish a newsletter with information on various topics related to hearing and balance, which can be a valuable resource.
How can people best care for their hearing health throughout their lives?
Have your ears checked at least annually, avoid prolonged exposure to loud noises, and never put anything in your ears without professional advice.
What are your interests outside of audiology?
Since I’m new to the country, I’m exploring as much as possible. I enjoy discovering new restaurants and trying diverse cuisines!
