Hearing loss or difficulties can affect a child’s social development, behaviour, and academic performance. Identifying and addressing any issues early is key to ensuring they can communicate confidently and reach their full potential.

At angli-EAR Hearing, we offer stress-free, child-friendly hearing assessments and treatments. Our experienced audiologists tailor each approach based on your child’s age and specific hearing needs, ensuring the best possible care.

Common Causes of Hearing Problems in Children

Infections

Ear infections can cause temporary hearing loss by creating fluid build-up or inflammation in the middle ear. If we detect signs of an infection during the assessment, we will refer you to a GP for the appropriate treatment.

Earwax Build-Up

If hearing loss is caused by troublesome earwax, we offer gentle and safe earwax removal for children aged two and above who can sit still. A few days of using Earol or another olive oil spray may be recommended beforehand to soften the wax.

Foreign Objects

Occasionally, hearing loss may be due to a small object blocking the ear canal. If safe, we will remove it during the appointment or refer your child to an ENT specialist if necessary.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Children with APD can hear sounds but struggle to process them, affecting speech, reading, and learning. We offer two solutions:

  • Auditory Training Apps – Fun and engaging digital tools to strengthen auditory skills.
  • Assistive Listening Devices – Wireless microphones that transmit a speaker’s voice (e.g., a teacher’s) directly into a child’s hearing aid, reducing background noise in classrooms.

Other Hearing Loss Causes

Some children may require specialist hearing aids or even surgical intervention. We offer a wide range of advanced hearing solutions and, if needed, can arrange referrals for cochlear implant assessments and post-surgery rehabilitation.

Paediatric Hearing Assessments: How It Works

We offer a range of relaxed and child-friendly hearing assessments, using games and toys to encourage responses. Our audiologists are highly trained in working with children, ensuring a comfortable experience for both child and parent.

1. Otoscopy (Ear Examination)

A small video otoscope allows us to check for blockages or infections. If wax removal is needed, we provide a gentle and safe service with prior preparation.

2. Tympanometry (Middle-Ear Function Test)

This painless pressure test checks if there is fluid or infection in the middle ear, which may require a referral for medical treatment.

3. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test

A soft earphone plays gentle sounds while we measure the response from tiny hair cells in the inner ear. This test is ideal for younger children and requires them to sit quietly for about 10 minutes.

4. Pure Tone Audiometry (Hearing Threshold Test)

Using game-based techniques, we assess hearing by playing different sounds and recording the child’s responses (e.g., placing a toy in a bucket when they hear a sound).

After the assessment, we provide a clear diagnosis and discuss treatment options based on your child’s needs.

Our expert audiologists deliver treatment based on a child’s age and the nature of their loss.

After the assessment, diagnosis will highlight hearing concerns and limitation. We can treat most diagnosed issues right here at the angli-EAR Hearing clinic. Paediatric treatments are often similar with what we offer adults, with all treatments delivered with our child-focused approach. Our audiologists are highly trained and experienced in working with all ages, so you can rest assured that your child will receive the very best expert care.

Infection

Should we find signs of infection during the assessment you’ll be referred to a GP, where you’ll be given a course of medication for your child.

Earwax

If hearing loss is caused by troublesome earwax, we can gently remove the earwax for children two years old or above who are happy to sit still, following a few days of Earol or other olive oil spray to soften the blockage.

Foreign Objects

Occasionally, hearing loss in children may also be caused by a foreign object blocking the ear. We’ll remove it if appropriate or refer you to hospital for an ENT specialist procedure.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Support or treatment for APD require one of two paths. With auditory training, we use fun apps specifically designed for children, to help manage their processing difficulties at home and school. There’s also the option of an assistive listening device which can be beneficial. To overcome background noise, a speaker – such as yourself or a teacher – can wear a microphone, which transmits the voice directly into a hearing aid, worn by the child. This is particularly useful in an educational setting.

Other Causes

Other types of hearing loss are best treated with specialist hearing aids. As an independent supplier, we have a wide range of advanced options for all ages. We can offer expert insight into which model suits your child’s needs.

Some patients benefit from surgical intervention. If a cochlear implant is required, we can perform an assessment, make a referral, then provide complete post-surgery care and rehabilitation.

Treatment Costs

Pricing varies, based on the treatment pathways outlined above. Options will be discussed with the child’s parent or carer following assessment with recommendations based around your child’s assessment.

● Hearing devices from £750 per ear
● Therapy from £300 per 12-week programme
